This is a book about science, culture and soil, viewed from the perspective of one family living in England in the Midlands over the past hundred years or so. In these forty short pieces key landmarks in the Life of Soil are described together with the stories behind the science. The hope is that it will stimulate a little more understanding of this most humble but vital of materials – the very earth beneath our feet!
Martin Wood was born and raised in rural Warwickshire, spending much of his time on local farms. He crossed the Irish Sea to work on clover pastures at Queen’s University, Belfast, and in 1984 returned to England to lecture at Reading University.
